FONO Under Construction

American Samoa’s new territorial government complex, FONO, has broken ground and is now actively being constructed in the downtown region of their state capitol, Fagatogo, Pago Pago. Inspired by local, historic architecture, the design of this structure incorporates some of the strongest elements of Samoan fales.

Although the construction process and materials are much different than that of traditional fales, the overall design pays homage to American Samoa’s culture and past. Elements seen in the current construction photos are, the colonnade, rounded footprint, and pedestal foundation.

As an associate architect under Lively Architects, Polyline is proud to have a hand in designing the legislative office ancillary structure. This portion of the structure serves as the office wing to legislators away from their chambers.

The elements seen currently in construction are only the beginning! Surrounded by the gorgeous scenery of American Samoa, the envisioned design is to be celebrated but pay respect to the land that holds it. We are excited to see the design reveal further embodiment of Samoan heritage as it unfolds.
